One weak point is your home router, and now you have the Avast WiFi inspector, review what it says, and it may tell you there is an issue.
Here, you can find out why Avast says my router is vulnerable and what you can do to fix it.
How Do I Configure My Wi-Fi Security?
Many people don’t know that their home network isn’t as secure as they think.
If you don’t change any settings, the defaults are very weak, and hackers can quickly jump onto your network to use it, or they can access any devices to try to glean information.
Besides hackers, you can find neighbors, or even the government can access your network with its mass surveillance.
You have three forms of encryption:
- WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) – used in the 1990s
- WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) – Used as a replacement for WEP
- WPA2 implements the latest security standards
WPA2-Personal creates a 256-bit key from your plain text phrase, sometimes called a PSK (PreShared Key), used for logging in from the user’s device to the access point or router.
Please note: the security is only as good as the passphrases. You will find the weakest area with WPA2-Personal encryption is that users don’t change or posts weak passphrases.
How Do I Fix My Router Settings?
One of the best ways you can fix router settings is to reset your router. However, you need to make sure you have the original password and login details, as you will need to go back in and configure the router again.
- There should be a reset hole, and to use this, you just need an opened paperclip.
- Insert it into the hole and hold it there for 30-seconds
- The wireless router should go back to the default settings
If you do this, you will again see the Avast ‘this network is insecure’ message because your device is not configured.
Doing this and changing your password and the SSID at the same time can make sure there are no unwanted devices on your network. Your router posts your SSID, although you can turn this off if you wish.
Why Is My Computer Not Connecting to My Router?
You can find instances where you are unable to connect to the router. Restarting the router is often the best way to fix this, as it half resets things that may have caused an issue.
If restarting doesn’t help, you can try to see if these are causing the issue.
- Update Network drivers: make sure you are using the most up-to-date network drivers. These should be available from the motherboard manufacturer’s website.
- Check you can see the router: The wrong address can stop your device from seeing the router. Press the Windows key + X and search for the command prompt. Enter ipconfig/ all. Check to see the default gateway allows you to connect with your browser (192.168.1.1 in many cases).
- Try another browser or device: If it is just one device or browser that can’t connect, it shows it is the device and not a router issue.
- Run a network scan: You can run the network troubleshooter in Windows 10 to see if this can fix anything.
Head to settings and Updates & Security – Troubleshooter. Follow the instructions and then restart your PC once finished to correct your problem, hopefully. - Clear all Settings: If running a network scan or an Avast security scan doesn’t help, you can use the command prompt to help clear some settings:
- netsh Winsock reset
- netsh int IP reset
- ipconfig /release
- ipconfig /renew
- ipconfig /flushdns
Can I Configure My Router Wirelessly?
When you use a wireless router as part of your home network, you can see the device is not configured correctly when using Avast Secureline. Review the report from a scan before you consider talking to tech support about your problem.
If you wish to configure your device wirelessly, this is simple to do using these quick steps.
- Enter your router’s IP address into your favorite web browser
- Log in with the default username and password
- Click on Setup inside your router’s settings
As you can see, this is very easy, and it is what makes it easy for hackers and others to gain access to your router. It doesn’t need a wired connection to gain access.
Because others can see traffic heading to your router, you are advised to use a VPN aside from the one bundled in the Avast Internet security package. (Read Open Chrome Safe Mode)
You can use Avast free to take care of viruses with a security scan, yet a premium VPN encrypts all your data at every stage. You will find you have fewer configuration issues with your router, and you can quickly stop hackers, governments, or ISP’s see what you are doing while online.
