Google has rolled out an update to the interface of their popular Chromecast with Google TV streaming devices. This update brings some handy changes to the home screen aimed at improving navigation and personalization.
The most notable additions are four new content tabs that live under the Explore tab on the main home screen. These tabs focus on Movies, Shows, Family, and Español.
Each of these tabs provides personalized recommendations curated specifically for each type of content. The Movies and Shows tabs suggest titles based on your viewing history and preferences across different streaming services. The Family tab spotlights kid-friendly shows and movies. And Español highlights Spanish language programming.
This makes it easier to dive into the type of content you’re looking for without having to search across different apps. Everything is aggregated in one place based on what Google TV thinks you’ll enjoy.
In their announcement, Google said the Family and Español tabs would provide “culturally relevant content for the whole family.” So the recommendations go beyond just kids’ shows or Spanish language programming.
The tabs also help users discover new content that aligns with their interests. Even if you don’t have kids or speak Spanish, the personalized suggestions may surface new shows and movies you’ll love.
In addition to the new content categories, this update also shifts around some key elements of the interface itself.
The profile icon has been moved to the top left corner, making it easier to switch between profiles. This is helpful for households with multiple users having their own customized Google TV experience.
Search has now been shifted to the opposite top right corner, while the quick settings button (for things like display, controllers, and device settings) has moved to the far right. This keeps the most-used functions easy to reach without having to navigate through menus.
These may seem like minor changes, but they go a long way towards refining the interface and navigation based on user behavior.
According to Google, the updates roll out beginning the week of July 25th, 2022. However, you can manually update to the latest Google TV software now to access the new features.

More Improvements to Come
This latest update is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance the Google TV experience. Earlier in 2022, they added shared watchlists, visual account switching, and new Google Assistant capabilities.
We expect more refinements over the coming months. Rumored upcoming features include support for Bluetooth headphones, data saver options, and user profiles for kids.
For now, the additional content tabs and navigation tweaks offer a better overall user experience. Fans of Chromecast with Google TV can enjoy an improved interface along with Google’s stellar content aggregation and recommendations.
The Google TV platform brings together movies, shows, live TV and more into one customizable home screen. With Chromecast built-in, it‘s easy to cast content from your phone or tablet.
